Galleries, Glass, and Gardens

L and I had a little getaway over the weekend. Dear, sweet Mit and Molly gave us a gift certificate for a bed and breakfast for Christmas and suggested we plan a pre-baby getaway. We took their advice and had a wonderful time making our way around the Brandywine Valley. The weather was gorgeous and we just had a blast wandering at our own pace and visiting lots of new places.

Our first stop was the Brandywine River Museum where I was anxious to see the Wyeth galleries. L and I have a Wyeth sketch in our house from my grandmother and I just love it. It was wonderful to see more of the Wyeth artwork on display. We followed our gallery visit with a trip to the Simon Pearce studio/shop/restaurant. We were lucky enough to be there on a day when they were doing some glass blowing. It is such an amazing process and it gave us a new respect for the workmanship involved (and thus the retail price) in creating these pieces. We had a lovely lunch in their beautiful restaurant along the river. Just gorgeous. The main attraction of the day came next with our visit to Longwood Gardens. If you have never been you need to go. Unbelievable! We have friends who have spent the entire day (8+ hours) there and now we can see why. We wandered everywhere and took dozens of pictures, it is hard not to when every single flower or plant is gorgeous. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. I was very proud of myself (L was too...he said so), being almost nine months pregnant and wandering around mile after mile but when you have something so gorgeous to look at it doesn't seem to bother you that much. I rested though, used the garden map as a fan, and took a cool shower when we made it back to the Bed and Breakfast. Our accomodations were fantastic and the innkeeper was the cutest and sweetest lady (who can make a mean french toast). We had a great dinner and finished our evening with a late showing (yes, I nodded off twice - not due to boredom but due to it being past my and baby's bedtime) of Star Trek. Let me tell you, my expectations for this movie were not high. I suggested it because I knew L wanted to see it and he has been to his fair share of romantic comedies so I thought it would be a nice treat. I really really liked it! I have never in my life seen even a partial episode of Star Trek but I followed right along and found it entertaining. There you have it...a review from the not so trekkie Star Trek fan.

A glorious weekend for two.
