Our grocery store is undergoing renovations. Perhaps you don't realize the side effects of this. I will do my best to explain.
Our grocery store, which is actually in the next town over, is really not much to write home about (i.e. there is no music being piped in, there is no imported cheese section, and the uniform is to wear a red shirt....the shade of red varies by employee from hot pink to almost brown). Renovations are certainly in order, but this does cramp our style a bit when it comes to food shopping.
We live in a small town. That is perhaps an understatement...the school bus driver already knows my name (I don't need to remind you that we have yet to have any children) and the post office is actually the first floor of someone's house. But, we do have a market. This is quite the establishment. It carries an odd odor...not necessarily unpleasant, but you could spend hours in there and not come up with the cause or causes of such a smell. The floor is pistachio green in color which would make it difficult to find a piece of lettuce if you were to drop any. Luckily the only "green" they sell is cabbage. There are five aisles, (aisles that take me about 25 steps to get from one end to the other) with the fifth aisle stocking various types of feed. For my big city readers: feed = nourishment for livestock. However, it is a friendly place and the people who work there have an average age of 72. As with most places around here it does pride itself on the baked goods. Whoopie pies, shoofly pie, and an assortment of flavored angel food cakes take up 1/2 an aisle. They come from places like "Ma's Kitchen" and "Stoltzfus Farms." Any other grocery store is at least 25-30 minutes away (a little too far for ice cream). Good thing the renovations are only lasting 3 days! We have enough lettuce...don't worry.
