We have a 3 year old!

It's true!  Luke is 3!!  As always I fluctuate between the stereotypical "I can't believe how fast time is flying by." and "Of course he is three and he is everything a three year old should be!"

Luke had been requesting his cake for about a month prior to his actual birthday.  His wants were very specific.  Two cakes:  1 horseshoe crab.  1 jellyfish.  He also had one specific birthday gift request:  a guitar.  I was not surprised by the cake selections...this kid is a maniac for anything related to the ocean or beach life.  But the guitar?!?  I told him that a guitar was a great idea but I also asked why he wanted a guitar.  He gave his patented "isn't it obvious?" huff and said:  "So I can play music and sing songs."  There you have it.

We had our neighbors over for a bbq/cake/birthday bonanza.  Nothing fancy but lots of fun!  I find the above statement about wanting the guitar for the song singing to be ironic because although he was thrilled that it was his birthday and that he was having a party he was very, and I mean VERY against anyone singing Happy Birthday to him!!  In fact, as the guests came to the door and wished him a happy birthday he said:  "Thank you, but please don't sing that song to me."  He said this to everyone!  The adults laughed and the kids were confused.  He was very serious though, in fact as L was carrying him over to blow out the candle (singular...see below caption for why I am no longer in the running for mother of the year) he whispered to us..."No one is going to sing that song, right?"  We didn't sing.

I did the jellyfish (I am aware it looks more like an octopus) and L did the horseshoe crab.  Luke said they were both "really great"!  Mission accomplished.

Preparing to be served the birthday feast!

The spread.  Can I just say that I cut the watermelon into fish shapes using a cookie cutter.  I love my kid.

Balloons and raquets make for fantastic birthday entertainment.

Operation Messy Playroom is in full motion

I didn't have birthday candles.  There, I said it.  I didn't have birthday candles for a birthday party...my OWN child's birthday party.   I am a bad mom.  L said I could blame it on the move or our sometimes hectic schedule but let's be honest. I forgot, didn't even think of it.  L then told me I could blame it on my old age...I then slapped him. ;)  We used a candle..a candleSTICK from the dining room.  It was pathetic and funny and Luke is three so he doesn't care.  At least we had a lighter.

CAKE

Presents for the birthday boy!  He was very gracious and very slow with the opening (again reminding me of PopPop)

One of the favorite gifts, a piggy bank!  (Gotta start 'em young, right Sheshy?!). Granny and Papaw wrapped up some containers of change so Luke and Mallory started to fill it up.  Sweet Natalie also handed over a ziplock bag full of the remaining contents of her piggy bank.  Love her!

I think all the kiddos and the adults had a great time!

Luke continues to make our lives brighter, more vivid, and full of surprises!  We are blessed to be his parents and we are thankful for the experiences we have had thus far and are more than excited about what lies ahead!  We love you Luke, thank you for being just the way you are!!!  Happy 3rd Birthday!
