I have hosted dozens and dozens of playdates. I love having kids here. I love to hear their voices, see them play, listen to them discuss and argue and be kids. Sure, there are fires to put out and situations that need an adult to handle. There is sometimes a lot of prep work involved or cleanup to be done but still....I LOVE IT! I'm not even sure "playdate" is the right word anymore. Luke is 8 but I still mostly coordinate with his friends' parents about scheduled playdates, the after school stuff is more just random and outside and sometimes chaotic. But the planned ones are my favorite, the ones that hold a place on my calendar giving Luke and I both something to look forward to. I do believe I hosted my most favorite "playdate" ever at the beginning of June. "Hosted" is a strong word because I really didn't do much at all. I went to the library ahead of time for some materials and I drove the kids and I paid. So yes, I was involved but that was about the extent of my "hosting." It was a "playdate" in which I could really see just how much Luke has grown and how independent he is and can be.
I came up with the idea for Luke and Becca to have a cooking day. A day in which they looked through cookbooks, they chose recipes, they made a list, they shopped, they prepped, they cooked, they set the table, they named the restaurant, they did it all! It was so awesome and the food was delicious!
(I was proud of my type A personality self and I really stayed out of it. There were no rules, other than that I took things out of the oven. Oh, and I did the dishes.)
They created and cooked and it took most of the day. Becca's parents, L and I, and the kids sat down at the dining room table lined with place cards and real plates and together we dined on one of the most delicious meals I have ever had! It was a joy!
Luke had the list, Becca drove the cart. Quite the team!
I didn't even put the bags in the cart....
or the car.
Bread from scratch!!
Welcome to Cutting Boards
Ready for service!
And as Steph put it... We were presented with dinner and a show! A post-dinner rainbow...a WONDERFUL day!
